From Classroom to Disney Channel: Meet Rising Star Carmen

Lights … Carmen … action! We are excited to introduce you to Carmen, a junior at Florida Cyber Charter Academy and a rising Disney Channel star. 

Singing and Dancing … 

Born in Mexico to Cuban parents, Carmen and her family moved to the United States when she was five years old. Growing up in a musical family – a choreographer mother and a musician father – gave Carmen a taste for the arts. 

Carmen started singing and dancing at a young age and competed on “The Voice Kids” at age eight followed by a two-year stint touring with the Broadway production of “On Your Feet”. She then competed on Nickelodeon’s “America’s Most Musical Family”. 

… Turns to Acting 

Carmen was focused on her singing and dancing career when COVID-19 shut things down. Combined with industry strikes, all opportunities came to a halt. During this time, she realized how important acting was to her. Carmen, along with 1,000+ others, auditioned for a Disney Channel pilot called “How We Became the Biggest Band” and eight-months later, landed a key role in the upcoming musical comedy. 

Supporting Her Passion – and Her Education 

Carmen and her family discovered early on that traditional school had limited options for families like theirs, and they discovered virtual learning. Once they moved to Florida, the program at Florida Cyber Charter Academy proved to be the perfect fit. 

Carmen has found that the virtual learning model has been crucial for balancing her education and her career. “The flexibility to take my computer and do school anywhere has been a game changer,” said Carmen. The highlight? She can participate in live class discussions or, if she’s in the middle of filming, she can watch a recording later.
